Tyler Heathcott listens to music during a benefit concert honoring him and three of his friends involved in a boating accident January 10th.
MAYFIELD, KY - A local community banding together with the help of music to cope with a tragedy.
Sunday, a special concert in Mayfield for four teenagers involved in a boating accident earlier this month.
On January 10th, the boat four boys were riding in capsized. Tyler Heathcott survived while the body of Trevor Williams was found the next day. Jacob Scott and McKenzie Stanley are still missing. And as the search for the missing teens continues, the boy's family and friends are seeing an outpouring of love and support.
Sunday night, there was a benefit concert event that raised around 19 thousand dollars.
As country star Darren Warren played air-guitar with his mic stand, the crowd in the High School gym cheered and a young man in a camo hat and Mayfield High Varsity jacket smiled.
"I'm pretty amazed about the bands they got," he said.
But more than amazed, that young man says he's grateful- grateful for the support, grateful to be alive. He is the lone survivor of an accident that left three of his best friends dead. That young man is Tyler Heathcott who survived after the group's boat capsized January 10th, while duck hunting on Kentucky Lake.
"It's getting a lot better to handle," he admits of the tragedy.
Sunday's 'Love Offerings' Concert was in his friend's memory and his honor. Heathcott says on their final day together, they listened, like they always did to country music...and that's exactly what played at the concert.
"They would be enjoying this, as much as I am," he said, with a smile.
Local musician Jace Hill wrote a song for the four boys, a song only Tyler was alive to hear and one that moved Teka Williams to tears.
"Trevor would never believe somebody would write a song about him, you know," the mother of victim Trevor Williams said.
She says the community's support has been overwhelming and prays it will continue until the families of McKenzie Stanley and Jacob Scott have peace.
And while the boys may not be home, they're in an entire community's thoughts and in Tyler's heart. He wears a shamrock for Trevor and now has a tattoo of a cross with the names Jacob, McKenzie, and Trevor written atop it.
His three best friends are gone, but never forgotten, "I did it so I can remember them and carry them with me always."
The concert lasted more than two hours and featured five musicians. Thousands of dollars were raised.
The families of McKenzie Stanley and Jacob Scott were not in attendance. They spent the day at the Lake continuing the search for their sons.
